Why (solo) game development is dogshit featured image

This topic has probably been talked about alot but I don’t fucking care.

My main reason for why game dev fucking stinks is the time that everything takes to do, especially solo is fucking insane. Entire teams of people sometimes take years to develop a game and that’s not mostly because they’re lazy and don’t work, this shit just takes a shitload of time.

Imagine this, you walk to school and then one day you decide that you want to take all the extra classes, the special ed classes and clubs that you can at the same time, then you have to show up to all at the same time. This is how being a solo game dev is, you need to know how to:

  • Program
  • Model
  • Map
  • Make SFX
  • Make VFX
  • Animate
  • Design UI
  • Write (stories, lore, whatever this doesn’t count if your game is shallow.)
  • Promote
  • Testing and debugging
  • Composing music
  • Localization
  • Licensing
  • Version Control

this isn’t even on because this list goes on for forever

This is why making a game is usually done with a multitude of people, because one person doing all of this (indie devs) either; Brings down the quality a lot, or takes simply forever to finish.

Having been in game dev for about 9 years atp I still can’t even do more then half of these things, I can’t promote, design good UI, make VFX, SFX or compose, so what’s the solution?

COOPERATION

This is the main fix for these issues, but the problem is that you need to work with other people. And first you need to FIND those kinds of people who are good at what you need.

So why does it suck

Because it’s not an easy, full of people branch like web-Dev which is overflowing with people, also because it’s not easy, you need some insane creativity to make something good, and skills to back that up as well.

tl/dr don’t waste 5 years on lua
